Abraham Mendelssohn wrote a letter (1820) to his daughter Fanny, sister of the famous composer Felix Mendelssohn: “Music will perhaps become Felix’s profession, while for you it can and must only be an ornament.” Intrigued by these words, Associate Music Director Carol Redman wondered why women have been so marginalized in the classical music world. The result of her exploration is a 3-part lecture series that traces the paths of musical women from the pre-Christian Era through the music of today. Each lecture will be generously supplemented with videos, facts and anecdotes. Price of admission includes wine and appetizers.
Julia Adolphe is a writer, composer, teacher and producer, and currently lives in Los Angeles. Her music is described as “displaying a remarkable gift for sustaining a compelling musical narrative” (Thomas May, Musical America).
Shulamit Ran is a composer with many awards and accomplishments, including winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1991. Her music is described as “intensely dramatic and deeply human…compelling for its intelligence and compositional clarity” (New World Records).
Anne-Marie McDermott is a world-renowned pianist and chamber musician. This season she will lead the Pro Musica Orchestra from the keyboard in two of Mozart’s piano concertos. Truly following in the steps of Mozart!
Melinda Wagner was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1999 and currently serves on the faculty of the Juilliard School of Music. Her music is described as “vital and fresh” (Anne Midgette, The New York Times).
